RANIA LACHHAB
I am a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California Berkeley, and an Affiliate with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. I obtained my PhD in Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics from Michigan State University in 2024.
I am interested in how economic tools can inform the efficient and equitable allocation of natural resources under different regulatory and environmental conditions. My recent work evaluates the effectiveness of agricultural and environmental policies, with a particular focus on the optimal management of water resources. In my Job Market Paper, I estimate the economic value of groundwater storage using California’s Kern Water Bank as a natural experiment. Other recent topics include the effectiveness and externalities of weather modification as a water supply intervention in California, farmers’ behavioral adaptation to changes in public irrigation infrastructure in Ethiopia, the effects of climate change on economic growth and groundwater resources in Morocco, and farmers’ adoption of nitrogen management practices in California.
Originally from Morocco, I hold an MS degree in Agricultural Engineering/Agricultural Economics from Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II. With this interdisciplinary background, I situate my work at the interface between economics, science, and policy, grounding my applied economics research in both rigorous quantitative methods and domain expertise.
My teaching includes microeconomics, introductory macroeconomics, and agribusiness for undergraduates, along with intermediate microeconomics and mathematical modelling for Executive Masters in Public Leadership.
